520 |a"The designer and the producer of mechanically stressed equipment considers the use of castings for components exposed to severe service conditions only if detailed information on casting properties is available. Unfortunately, there still exist some misconceptions in the interpretation of test results obtained on various kinds of cast test bars (separately cast, cast on, or cut out of castings) and, in some cases, lack of understanding of the numerous foundry and testing variables which affect either the mechanical properties of the casting or the results of the tests. These variables are related to the melt quality (composition, impurities, melting procedure, holding time), to casting conditions (casting design, gating, section size, pouring temperature and technique) to heat treatment (if applicable), and to testing methods (design, pre-paration, size and shape of test bars, tensile speed, gauge length). Some of these factors were investigated on various magnesium sand casting alloys in the as-cast, aged, and fully heat treated conditions. Results of this investigation are presented and discussed"--Abstract.
