Total emissions of fluoride to the atmosphere are estimated at 15 644 tons. The largest contributor is the primary aluminum industry, which accounts for 57% of the total. Emissions from phosphate fertilizer and elemental phosphorus plants account for a further 17% and the primary iron and steel industry for 16%. On a geographic basis the Province of Quebec accounts for 48% of the Canadian total followed by Ontario with 18%. It is estimated that about 70% of nationwide fluoride emissions, close to 11 000 tons, are in the gaseous state"--Abstract. |
