The review is based on a brief survey of the techniques and practices presently used by the petroleum, mining and transportation companies as well as government agencies that are operating in northern Canada. The survey revealed that there is no unified approach. It was concluded that there is a need for discussion between industry and the regulatory bodies in order to arrive at minimum standards for petroleum product spill containment dykes in the Arctic.
