A field study on the permeability of multiyear ice to sea water with implications on its permeability to oil / A. R. Milne, R. H. Herlinveaux, G. Wilton, Arctic Marine Sciences, Institute of Ocean Sciences,...: En46-4/77-11E-PDF

"Four multiyear ice floes of opportunity, in the vicinity of Resolute Bay, N.W.T., were investigated for their permeability with respect to sea water. Experiments took place between 24th August and 19th September, 1976, when the ice floes were expected to be warmest and hence most porous to brine drainage. The main technique was to measure the flow-rate of water which filled blind holes drilled to various depths in the ice. All holes flooded but at varying rates, depending on the particular floe examined, and the hole depth. A simple, analytical model for hole-flooding, where applicable, enabled the porosity with respect to interconnected pores and capillaries to be determined. Although no oil was used, results indicate that most, if not all oil trapped in and under multiyear ice should surface before mid-September if it was spilled under the ice during the previous winter and spring"--Abstract.
