"There are presently several Videotex systems in the early operational or development stages. The principle of these systems is to provide access to some data base for a large class of users through an inexpensive terminal which uses an ordinary TV set for the display of the retrieved information. While user feedback to the data base is possible in most systems through the use of a key pad, the information retrieval procedures of the present systems are very simple-minded, consisting mainly of going interactively through a hierarchical directory of menu choices"--Executive summary, page iv.
