Variation of water quality parameters during floods and its implications for sampling protocols / by A.G. Bobba and E.D. Ongley.: En13-5/87-136E-PDF

"The intent is to demonstrate the very substantial differences which occur between snowmelt and rainfall induced events. The biogeochemical processes operating on source materials are an important control over stream chemistry. Suspended sediment plays an important role in chemical transport, particularly for phosphorous and organic contaminants. Sediment transport behaves very differently from major ion transport; sediment-associated chemistry is different seasonally and requires different sampling protocol. We will draw conclusions and make recommendations for sampling both for sediment-associated chemistry and for major ions. We demonstrate the utility of these sampling protocols for making meaningful inferences about river basin management"--Abstract.
