Fort St. Joseph : a history / by Elizabeth Vincent. Fort St. Joseph : a structural history / by Elizabeth Vincent.: R61-2/7-335E-PDF

"A British military post was established on St. Joseph Island in 1796 to replace Michilimackinac, which was being handed over to the Americans. … The first of the permanent buildings to be constructed at Fort St. Joseph was the blockhouse, followed by a bakehouse, guardhouse and palisades. Later a stone powder magazine, a stone bakery and kitchens were built. Around the fort was a collection of private buildings, dwellings and storehouses belonging to traders and some of the officers of the Indian Department. … Fort St. Joseph was abandoned and in the summer of 1814 was burned by an American expedition on its way to attack Michilimackinac. When the war ended Michilimackinac was given back to the Americans and the British built a new post at Drummond Island although they used the powder magazine at Fort St. Joseph. When the boundary through the Great Lakes was established Drummond Island was awarded to the Americans and in the fall of 1828 the British troops moved to Penetanguishene on the other side of Lake Huron and Fort St. Joseph was abandoned."--Abstract, pages vi-vii.
