Potential underestimation of chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations in fresh water / by R. James Maguire and Richard J. Tkacz.: En13-5/89-113E-PDF
"Significant concentrations of PCBs and other chlorinated hydrocarbons have been found in dichloromethane extracts of filtered Niagara River water at pH 12 after the water had been thoroughly extracted at pH 1. This finding was unexpected since all of those chemicals should have been extracted at low pH. Moreover considerable quantities of these chemicals were occasionally recovered in the basic extracts relative to acidic extracts and extracts of suspended solids. Experiments with water from another source showed that some PCBs were recovered in dichloromethane extracts of basic filtered water which had previously been extracted under either acidic or neutral conditions"--Management Perspective.
