Selective toxic effects of heavy metals on reproductive activities of the oligochaete tubifex in lake sediments polluted with mine tailings / by T. Jackson, T. Reynoldson, K. Zhou, N. Nguyen.: En13-5/95-26E-PDF
"The paper highlights selected results and conclusions of an research project on interdisciplinary the biogeochemistry and toxic effects of various heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, and chromium) at different sites in Larder Lake, Ontario, a small Canadian Shield lake polluted with tailings from a gold mine. Data on solvent-extractable metal and total metal concentrations in the sediments, as well as various natural metal-binding agents in the sediments (e.g. oxyhydroxides and humic matter) and other sediment characteristics which define the sedimentary environment (e.g. pH and Eh), were compared with measurements of toxic effects of the sediments on different reproductive functions of the common benthic segmented worm, Tubifex tubifex. In addition, relevant data on fundamental properties of the metals (e.g. polarisability, ionisation potentials, and crystal field stabilisation energy) were gleaned from the literature and used in the interpretation of metal behaviour"--Management perspective.
