An update of the status of the inshore cod stock in Subdivision 4Vn (May-Dec) for 1981 / by S.J. Smith and B.A. Charlton.: Fs70-8/82-43E-PDF
"The cod fishery in Subdivision 4Vn (May-December) is mainly an "inshore" fishery with longliners in the 0-49.9 GT tonnage class landing the largest amount. This year, the quota for fixed gear less than 65 feet was exceeded in September. An additional allocation was exceeded in mid-October which resulted in the closure of this category of the fishery on October 17th. Analyses of the 1981 research survey data suggests an upward trend of 4+, 5+ and 6+ cod. The 1977 and 1975 year-classes predominate in recent surveys but to date have not exhibited a marked influence in the commercial fishery. Low return rates for logbooks and the lack of effort information from Newfoundland based vessels which fish in 4Vn, limited the interpretative value of commercial catch-per-unit-effort estimates. Commercial samples from the longline fishery, in recent years, show an increasing trend in length-at-age for fish age 6 and older, and in weight-at-age for all ages."
