An evaluation of the 4X haddock population characteristics during 1962-81 with yield projected to 1983 / by R.N. O'Boyle and G.N. White III.: Fs70-8/82-53E-PDF

"Prior to 1960, annual 4X haddock landings fluctuated between 10-20,000 t. During the mid to late 1960's, heavy exploitation by both foreign and Canadian fleets resulted in catches in excess of 30,000 t and the subsequent rapid decline in stock abundance. Quota regulations have been in force since the early 1970's. Since 1977, the annual landings have steadily increased. The 1981 TAC of 28,000 t was exceeded by over 3,000 t and the 1982 TAC has been established at 32,000 t. The observed catch trends have been followed in both the Canadian summer and US autumn groundfish surveys, although they differ specific details. The present assessment used a combination of the "Survivor Method" and Cohort Analysis to derive the 1981 stock size similar to the procedure carried out in the previous assessment of this stock. The view of stock status is considerably more pessimistic than in previous years."
