"Some Canadian rivers are prone to flooding caused by ice jams. Frazil ice may initiate the jams by forming a hanging dam under the ice cover. It can also impede the river flow generally because it clings to itself and other things readily. An overview given by Pratte (1976) describes the types of river flow resistance and mentions the effects of frazil ice"--Introduction, page 1.
