"An analytical assessment update was attempted, however, there was difficulty arriving at precise assessment parameters. Partial recruitment was calculated by two methods (a) ration of commercial to research vessel catches at age and (b) average Fs from cohort runs 1973-79. Using the two methods and the different terminal F's, and F0.1 associated with them indicated removal levels in 1981 of 9.000 using (a) to 5,000 using (b). Because of the uncertainty of the parameters, and because of the apparent stable condition of the stocks it appears prudent to leave the TAC for 1981 at 5,000 the average total catch since 1974"--Abstract.
