On the vertical transit method of determining the mean velocity in open channel flow / Peter Engel.: En13-5/90-133E-PDF

"Theoretical and dimensional analysis were used to examine the factors that must be considered in the integration of a vertical velocity profile of an open channel flow to obtain the mean velocity. The results show, that for logarithmic profiles, the mean velocity obtained by vertical integration is slightly larger than the true value and that this discrepancy is primarily a function of the ratio a/h (h = depth of the flow, a = the distance between the meter rotor and the bed when the sounding weight is resting on the bed)"--Summary, page iii.
