"Although it was not possible to measure sea ice thickness directly, monthly maps indicating the distribution of first-year and multi year ice for the entire Beaufort Sea region were prepared from Nimbus 5 passive microwave imagery. Detailed investigation of the shear zone was performed using 13.4 GHz scatterometer and X-band SLR imagery for April 1975. A description of the various sensors employed and an outline of the development of a UHF radar for direct measurement of sea ice thickness are included"--Summary.
