"The rapid expansion of the exploration for oil and gas in the Canadian Arctic with the consequent risk to the environment has led to a large-scale environmental study - the Beaufort Sea Project. Of prime concern are the environmental risks attendant on an uncontrolled oil well blowout on the sea bed in ice covered waters. To assess this problem a 'standard Beaufort Sea blowout' was agreed upon as that expected from the geological formations of the area"--Introduction.
