Both procedures are practical, simple, rapid, inexpensive and can be used to screen solid phase samples (sediments, suspended sediments, soils and sludges) for the bioavailability of organic and inorganic contaminants in the environment. These procedures are useful in monitoring sediments, landfill sites and effluent streams from biological treatment plants as well as air samples. These toxicity testing procedures could provide sewage treatment plant operators with rapid and sensitive means of assessing the toxicity of solid wastes (sludges) prior to their disposal"--Abstract.</marc:subfield>
