In this paper, the determination of any trend is considered as a part of the larger task of characterizing the variability of an environmental quality indicator. The features of several parametric and nonparametric methods are discussed with respect to their applicability for estimation and detection, the ability to handle changes of different forms, the inclusion of concomitant variables in the analysis and the inherent assumptions of the method.
