"The objective of the study is to analyze the role of the R&D effort in the export performance of Canadian manufacturing industries. The approach is comparative; observations for manufacturing exports of eight other industrialized countries are analyzed at the same time. Although it is recognized that a break-down of industries to a very low level of agregation would be very desirable for this type of analysis, the scarce data for R&D and industrial production did not allow the definition of more than fourteen (14) two and three digit groups of manufacturing industries"--Executive summary, page 1.
