Validity of wave direction predictions / M.G. Skafel and C.T. Bishop.: En13-5/93-55E-PDF

"Wave direction predictions using two one-dimensional and one two-dimensional parametric numerical wave models are compared to wave direction data. The wind and wave direction data sets are from Lakes Erie, Ontario, and St. Clair, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Much of the predicted wave direction data exhibit differences of more than ±20° from the measured data, although that generated using the Donelan (1980) algorithm generally has improved accuracy. The two-dimensional model does not provide superior results when assessed at a single site. The discrepancies between the estimates and the field data are attributable to both uncertainties in the field data and the hindcast techniques. Poor direction estimates can have a major impact on the usefulness of related engineering design studies"--Abstract.
