Direct determination of lead in seawaters by laser-excited atomic fluorescence spectrometry / V. Cheam, J. Lechner, I. Sekerka and R. Desrosiers.: En13-5/93-61E-PDF

"This paper describes a LEAFS method for direct determination of lead in seawaters down to femtogram levels. No separation/concentration steps nor chemical modifier were used. A programmable "in-situ" known addition technique was developed and used as an integral part of the method to reduce sample preparation steps thus possible contamination sources, and compensates for spectral line drift better than standards calibration technique. Four seawater Certified Reference Materials were analysed for Pb concentrations, which were found well within certified ranges. Also spike recoveries of 100±10 % were achieved using a Certified Reference Material and an unknown seawater sample. The practical detection limit was 3 fg Pb absolute (or 1 ng/l relative). To our knowledge, this is the lowest absolute detection limit ever reported for seawater analysis"--Abstract.
