With the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and construction of the Beauharnois hydroelectric dam, the upstream part of Lake Saint-Louis became heavily industrialized, and its aquatic environment has been severely impacted by discharges of toxic contaminants"--Issue, page 2.
