Interpretation of geochemical tests of Huckleberry mine waste rock : speciation and reaction progress modeling of humidity cells HC-13, HC-14, and HC-1 / prepared for Environment Canada ; prepared by K....: En40-240-1/07-02E-PDF
"Six humidity cell kinetic tests containing waste rock from the Huckleberry Mine in northern British Columbia have been maintained for uniquely long times of up to twelve years. The rocks under investigation have a NP/AP ratio smaller than 1; however, some of the cells are still producing circum-neutral drainage, despite the long duration of the tests. The interpretation of the test data is complicated by the presence of gypsum at significant concentrations (> 1 wt%) and the initial application of sulfuric acid leaching to remove carbonate NP. The objectives of this work are to use kinetic reaction progress modeling to assess the geochemical activity of the pyritic altered volcanic waste rock from the Huckleberry Mine as presently under test, with particular regard to humidity cells HC-13, HC-14, and HC-1. The modeling results are used as a basis to explain, as far as possible, the humidity cells' leaching behaviour related to the initial chemistry and mineralogy of the rocks. In addition, a general discussion on using reactive transport modeling to assess the geochemical evolution in full-sized mine waste rock dumps is provided"--Executive summary, page i.
