520 |a"This handbook has been produced under the auspices of the Canada Department of Communications. It has followed seven years of investigations of the impact of television upon northern Indian communities. It forms a response to two primary findings of that research. First, it is an acknowledgement that Native programming itself is essential to the ultimate aspirations of Native people, figuring as a new vehicle of communications in the normal conduct of their daily lives, self-assuring identity, and protecting a natural balance in cultural change. Secondly, it supports attempts by Native groups to respond to the stressful content of general television which they often reject, by promoting content more in harmony with their own idiom, more satisfying because of its practical role in life, and more in accord with the traditional elements of thought and belief still cherished by many"--Preface, page 1.
