Environmental monitoring near the MaCaulay Point and Clover Point marine sewage outfalls at Victoria, British Columbia in 1989 and 1990 / by Alan G. Colodey, Ruth A. Salmon, Patricia G. Lim.: En40-241/92-14E-PDF

"Environment Canada (Environmental Protection) sampled locations near the Victoria, B.C. Capital Regional District sewage outfalls at Macaulay and Clover Points on three occasions: April 1989, October 1989, and April 1990. Sampling included dissolved oxygen profiles, sediment grabs (for metals, organic carbon and bacteria), and otter trawls (for trace metals in fish and invertebrates). Sediment samples were also obtained near the Belmont septic tank outfall off Esquimalt lagoon, and from a reference area on Constance Bank. No effect of Macaulay and Clover Point outfalls was evident on dissolved oxygen levels, which were 75 to 80 % air saturation. Fecal coliform and Clostridium perfringens sewage indicator bacteria were detected at all Macaulay and Clover Point sediment stations. Sediment trace metals at all three sites were all below levels of concern (less than Apparent Effects Levels (AET) and Effect Range-Low (ER-L)), except for mercury in one sample from Macaulay Point (1989) which exceeded ER-L levels and approached the oyster AET. Mercury was bioaccumulated in invertebrates and fish sampled at both outfalls, but was below Canadian guidelines for consumption (0.5 µg/g wet wt.). Sewage related debris was evident in a 1989 trawl sample and in two 1990 sediment samples at Macaulay Point outfall"--Abstract, page ii.
