A feasibility study on the adaptation of the SYNCOMPEX concept to the VHF/UHF land mobile communication system : final report / by H.M. Hafez and R. Goubran.: Co24-419/1985E-PDF

"The purpose of this research is to study the feasibility of adapting the SYNCOMPEX concept [1] to the VHF/UHF land mobile radio system. The SYNCOMPEX system is a variation of the Amplitude-Compandored Side Band ACSB system. Both systems transmit single side-band signals modulated with reduced dynamic range speech signals. The RF channel bandwidth needed for these transmissions is about 5 KHz, which is considerably smaller than the 20 to 30 KHz needed for FM modulated signals"--Introduction, page 1.
