"The snow crab fishery in the Estuary and the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence began in the late 1960s. The fishery experienced a boom from 1979 to 1985, and a management approach based on the TAC (total allowable catch) was gradually introduced between 1985 and 1995. Nine fishery management areas (13 to 17, 16A, 12A, 12B and 12C) for this species are under the responsibility of the Quebec Region in the Estuary and northern Gulf of St. Lawrence"--Context, page 1.
