"Under its various mandates (Migratory Birds Convention Act 1917, Canada Wildlife Act 1973 and Committee on Status of Endangered Wildlife 1983), the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) is responsible for the management of migratory birds and endangered species and their habitats. The Canadian Wildlife Service also oversees the protection and management of key national habitats and plays a lead role in establishing an expanding network of National Wildlife Areas (Desmeules et al. 1983). To further this goal, an essential requirement is an inventory of key wildlife areas distributed according to natural regions in Canada"--Introduction, page 1.
