Darlington Ngs cooling water intake risk evaluation for frazil ice blockage / by Gee Tsang.: En36-522/61-1982E-PDF

"Ontario Hydro is planning the construction of a nuclear power station at Darlington, Ontario. The cooling and process water will be drawn from Lake Ontario. The water intake will be constructed at a depth of 10 m and a perforated slab will be placed above the intake to prevent fish and other foreign objects from entering the water intake. The blockage of the water intake by frazil is one of the concerns of the water intake and for that the author is requested by Ontario Hydro to examine the frazil blockage. This report is produced in response to the above request. In the analytical study, the thermo-hydrodynamics for the heating and cooling of a lake for water near the freezing point is first explained. Then a mathematical model is developed to predict the cooling and the expansion of the mixing layer. The frazil blockage problem is translated into a problem of supercooling of the mixing layer after it has reached the bottom of the lake. Based on the mathematical model, a computer program is developed which permits the calculation of the temperature and the propagation of the mixing layer under different hydro-meteorological conditions. Some computed results are shown in the report"--Abstract.
