520 | 3 |a"In 2015, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) surveyed 41 coastal wetland and riverine sites in the Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair drainages for freshwater mussels. Twenty-seven live species (744 individuals), including eight Species at Risk (SAR), were observed. Although all riverine sites had previously been sampled, a number of the coastal wetland sites (Four Mile Creek, Fifteen Mile Creek, Cootes Paradise Marsh, and Martindale Pond) had never been formally surveyed by DFO. Species richness at coastal wetland sites ranged from zero to five and Pyganodon grandis was the most abundant species. The first live occurrence of Quadrula quadrula, a SAR, was recorded in Fifteen Mile Creek. Cootes Paradise Marsh maintains a mussel community represented by at least five different species and the presence of Toxolasma parvum was confirmed. Riverine sites (Credit, Grand, Speed, and Sydenham rivers) were sampled for data on target species, and richness ranged from two to 18 species, including six SAR. No mussels were observed in Bronte Creek or Sixteen Mile Creek-Halton. Our findings allow for a better understanding of the ranges and population statuses of SAR in these areas"--Abstract, page v. |
