Functional design of a knowledge-based spacecraft autonomy management system (SAMS) / by T. Gomi.: Co24-3/1-85-047E-PDF

"A functional design of the Spacecraft Autonomy Management System (SANS) is presented. The SANS forms a subcomponent of the Advanced Autonomous Spacecraft Computer (AASC) architecture which has been developed by the author and his colleagues under contract to the Department of Communications during the past three years. The SANS occupies the top layers of the AASC hierarchy and is expandable upward to incorporate highly intelligent functions. These functions apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the future autonomous operation of spacecraft. Related background concepts leading to the SANS design are explained in the introduction. Results from a survey of the efforts towards developing autonomous spacecraft in the U.S. aerospace community are described along with related developments in the AI community. Finally, the functional requirements of the SANS are presented"--Summary, page vi.
