Kootenay Park visibility project / [Carol Evans, Joanne Pottier, Bruce Lohanes].: En14-403/1996E-PDF

"Kootenay National Park is located in southeastern British Columbia on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains and along the Columbia River valley. Its spectacular mountain views and natural mineral springs have attracted visitors to the area for many years. Recently, concern has been increasing over visibility degradation and the negative impacts this may have on health in the area and on tourism in the Park. Kootenay National Park and Environment Canada have thus entered a partnership to study the poor visibility events and attempt to determine the source(s) of the degradation. … While the study is ongoing, data collected from May 1995 to February 1996 indicate that visibility reduction unrelated to weather systems occurs most frequently under dry stagnation periods, especially in the winter months. The nature of these events tends to fall into two prime categories. One category observed is "local smoke", either in a plume or layers, primarily originating from a nearby beehive burner but also from campfires or woodstoves. The other is "regional haze" which obscures the valley more extensively and likely originates from farther away but occasionally may be local smoke resident in the air longer. Meteorological data has been helpful in identifying and categorizing the nature of these events"--Abstract, page i.
