520 |a"Hypochlorites are salts of hypochlorous acid (HClO) and can be formed by a disproportionation reaction between chlorine gas and strong bases such as metal hydroxides. Hypochlorites are generally safe to use but may pose significant health hazards when used inappropriately. The number of accidents involving hypochlorites has been steadily rising in the past decade. Of the 272 incidents involving products containing hypochlorite reported to the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre (CANUTEC), 75% of these involved solutions containing less than 7% active chlorine. … The main objective of this study was to determine the amount of chlorine gas release from hypochlorites in commonly used forms such as solutions, solids or powders when they are mixed with hydrochloric acid (HCl) or water. The results of this study will support recommendations delivered by Canadian Transport Emergency Centre (CANUTEC) to the members of the public during incidents involving these chemicals. Furthermore, these results will help the public to educate themselves on proper use of common household cleaning agents and pool chemicals to reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries resulting from the use of products containing hypochlorites"--Pages 15, 17.
