520 | |a"Habitat restoration projects are important actions aimed at improving fish habitat in altered or degraded areas. Restoration projects should be well planned and target the native fish community of the region. Assembling information on existing fish habitat conditions is costly and time-intensive, yet such information is important for restoration planning. In this report we introduce and demonstrate the application of an a priori index-of-probable-habitat-use tool. This tool can be used in initial planning stages to describe how the fish community may use certain types of habitats. Using the tool, we developed index-of-probable-habitat-use tables that describe vegetation and substrate categories and water depths where different portions of the fish community are commonly associated. We apply the tool to the Toronto region fish community and describe the types of habitats that would most likely efficiently and beneficially contribute to desirable fish populations and productivity. Such preliminary assessments of habitat usage can help guide restoration activities"--Abstract, page vii. |
