The 'standard form' is first discussed, with an emphasis on how to distinguish 'rigid' degrees of freedom from 'elastic' ones. Modal coordinates are then introduced, being the most useful coordinate system in which to perform calculations. Input and output matrices are also formulated. The resulting equations are expressed both in state-space form and using transfer functions.
