A lightweight portable power-driven winch for Arctic CTD operation / by D.J. Brooks.: En36-525/77-1E-PDF

"For many years, scientists and technicians have worked in the Arctic collecting CTD data in various ways and using almost any type of equipment that could be adapted to the harsh environment encountered. With but one exception, there has been very little development towards providing a lightweight winch system to collect data utilizing the more sophisticated sampling systems available on today's market. Mr. P. Becker's lightweight system, developed over the last few years, is no doubt a very useful and valuable sampling system. However, we feel a completely self—contained unit limits sampling capabilities to some degree. With today's spiralling costs for charter aircraft, one cannot afford equipment breakdowns, and it is therefore necessary to maintain back—up systems. We feel that the following winch design will provide the oceanographer with a versatile system capable of utilizing more than one type of CTD system yet simple enough to require little or no maintenance during a survey. In addition, the system is compact and capable of operating from almost any type of sampling platform (e.g. Bell 206A helicopters, light aircraft, or small boats)"--Introduction.
