"The Benson Lake Coast Copper Mine commenced operations in August 1962. The mine is currently processing approximately 850 tons of ore per calendar day and a feasability study shows the potential for expansion to 1500 tons per day. At the expanded production rate the mine has a life expectancy of ten years. Impoundment of tailings in the vicinity of the mine was impossible because of lack of suitable terrain. Therefore, the company was permitted to discharge into Benson Lake"--Introduction.
