"Historically the west coast of Newfoundland and in particular the Bay of Islands, has been noted as a major herring fishing area. Landings reached a peak during the late 1940's with average landings (1945-50) of 32,000 mt (Templeman, 1966) and peak landings of 80,000 mt in 1946"--Introduction, page [1].
