Experimental and theoretical considerations of distributed-feedback side-coupled lasers / by K O Hill, Akira Watanabe.: Co24-3/7-1235-1972E-PDF

"The possible operating modes of a distributed-feedback side-coupled laser are discussed. A modal analysis of thin-film distributed-feedback lasers is presented and used to elucidate the mode of operation of the side-coupled laser. Experimental observations made to determine the nature of the laser output are shown to support the hypothesis that laser action is preferentially obtained in modes belonging to a high-order bound-mode groupof the structure"--Abstract, page 1.
