5203 |a"This report provides an assessment of the Program Delivery Pilot Project (PDPP), one of the most significant projects of the ANIK-B Communications Program of the Department of Communications (DOC). This project is a field trial involving the reception of television signals at 12 GHz from the 20 watt rf channels of the ANIK-B using low cost TV receive-only earth terminals with antenna diameters of 1.2 and 1.8m. The PDPP has been in operation since late September 1979 with approximately 80 receive-only terminals located in the two geographically distinct regions of northwestern Ontario and British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The objectives of the project are to demonstrate, evaluate and gain field experience with direct-to-home and small community satellite broadcasting, to provide a testing ground and small initial market for terminals, to contribute to policy development and plans for future operational use of broadcasting satellites and to provide information to the various interested agencies. This report describes the pilot project, documents the technical results obtained, summarizes the reaction of the participants, including members of the general public, and draws conclusions regarding the implementation of future direct broadcasting satellite systems"--Abstract, page 1.
