"The Canadian Beaufort Sea was the center of extensive hydrocarbon exploration in the 1970s and 1980s where drilling activity was confined to the Beaufort Shelf in water depths of less than 70 m. Renewed offshore hydrocarbon exploration programs include the potential for oil and gas wells on the Beaufort Slope in water depths of greater than 100 m"--Introduction, page 1.
