Status of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) stocks of the Newfoundland region, 1987 / by M.F. O'Connell, J.B. Dempson, E.G.M. Ash, and N.M. Cochrane.: Fs70-8/88-10E-PDF
"Commercial catches (preliminary figures) of small and large salmon in both insular Newfoundland and Labrador in 1987 showed an overall increase over 1986. Catches of small salmon increased over historic levels. Catches of large salmon were comparable to historic levels. The overall increase in commercial catches of small and large salmon in insular Newfoundland was attributed mainly to SFA 3. Most other SFAs experienced decreases, particularly along the south coast (SFAs 9, 10, and 11). As a result of the worst drought conditions in 40 years, most scheduled rivers in insular Newfoundland were closed for most of the angling season in 1987. Consequently, recreational catches of grilse were about half of that recorded for 1986 and historically. Labrador was unaffected by drought conditions; catches of grilse and large salmon in 1987 increased over 1986 and historic levels overall. There was an apparent overall increase in abundance of small and large salmon in Labrador in 1987 compared to 1986. With the exception of SFA 3, the reverse appears to have been true for insular Newfoundland. Predictions regarding catches of small and large salmon for Labrador and for small salmon for insular Newfoundland in 1988 are provided"--Abstract, page 2.
