"Offshore banks of NAFO Subareas 4 and 5 have, in the past, supported significant herring fisheries. In recent years, larger vessels of the Scotia-Fundy purse seine fleet have made occasional trips to offshore banks to search for herring that may be of different stock origin to that of the usual 4WX fishery. In 1986, several significant findings were made, including spawning fish on both Western and Georges Banks. This paper summarizes information from offshore banks of the Scotian Shelf and Georges Bank, including historical landings and recent data from research surveys and the commercial fleet"--Abstract, page 2.
