"The automotive industry including vehicle assembly and parts production, is a key component of the Canadian economy, contributing about 12 percent of manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP), providing roughly 160 000 jobs (1997 figures) and generating a large surplus on international trade. The industry is the largest single destination of capital investment in plant and equipment in the total Canadian manufacturing sector"--Abstract, page iii.
