"The Gulf and Kuwait War of 1990-91 officially began with the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq on August 2, 1990. The crisis culminated with an armed conflict during the months of January and February 1991. This conflict largely involved aerial bombardment. There was limited involvement of infantry or ground forces. At the end of the conflict, the Iraqi military ignited over 600 oil well fires which required months to extinguish and which produced extensive local air pollution"--Introduction, page 9.
