"The transformation of inorganic forms of arsenic to volatile, organic forms by various microorganisms occurs naturally in the environment. The literature on this phenomenon, which is termed biomethylation, is reviewed, with particular emphasis on its occurrence as related to arsenic-containing preserved wood. Documentation of isolated occurrences of the problem in houses built with preserved wood foundations is also reported"--Abstract.
