A study of ethnocultural offender correctional experiences : programs, services, and community connections / Christopher Greco, Gregory P. Brown, Jane Barker, Kindra McMillan, Grace Tiersma, & Laura Gamwell.: PS83-3/443E-PDF
"In Canada, the literature on racism in the correctional system has focused on Indigenous persons. The current study reports on personal interviews with N = 39 Ethnocultural federal offenders, here defined as any non-White, non-Indigenous person "who has specific needs based on race, language or culture and who has a desire to preserve his/her cultural identity and practices." (Commissioner's Directive-767, 2013a, para.1) Offenders who self-identify as Black make up the largest proportion of Ethnocultural offenders. The objectives of the study are (1) to describe the experiences of Ethnocultural offenders, and Black offenders specifically, in participating in correctional programs and services while incarcerated, and (2) to describe the relevance and utility of correctional programs and services in preparing Ethnocultural offenders, and Black offenders specifically, returning to the community"---Executive summary, page iii (first section).
