| 520 | |a"Environment Canada is currently spearheading an initiative called the Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN) in partnership with other federal departments, the provinces, universities, industry and other stakeholders. This endeavor will emphasize long term monitoring, research and experimentation on selected ecozones throughout Canada to answer questions about what is changing in our ecosystems and why. EMAN is a national system of "nodes" or regions made up of individual sites at which research and monitoring activities are taking place. The Georgia Basin is being proposed for node development during the early phase of this program. Issues to be addressed by EMAN include the effects of climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, and persistent toxic chemicals on ecosystem health. Current stressors in the Basin include habitat conversion, regional pollution sources and resource harvesting. In the future, stressors like climate change, UVb increases and problems with exotic species may be locally important. When fully developed, EMAN sites will offer the ability to measure both stressors and their wider ecosystem effects"--Summary. |
