Biodiversity monitoring stations for benthic megafauna in the Disko Fan Conservation Area / by Ellen Kenchington, Camille Lirette, Margaret Treble, Kevin Jacobs.: Fs97-6/3499E-PDF

"The Artic Council's Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Plan (CBMP) is a pan-Arctic, long-term, integrated biodiversity monitoring plan. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has established benthic biodiversity monitoring sites at four monitoring stations in or adjacent to the Disko Fan Conservation Area, a marine refuge in the lower Baffin Bay, following the CBMP. Photo transects were collected with a drop camera system for the purposes of providing baseline data for future monitoring of benthic invertebrate megafauna in this sensitive region, and for facilitating pan-Arctic comparisons of benthic communities. Species from ten phyla (Annelida, Arthropoda, Brachiopoda, Bryozoa, Chordata, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Nemertea, Porifera) were identified from the imagery. The average abundance (N), number of taxa (S), Margalef d, Shannon Diversity and Simpson's Index with their Hill equivalents, and Pielou's Evenness, were calculated for each transect. Bray-Curtis similarity in community composition among transects was calculated from log(x+1)-transformed standardized abundance. UPGMA cluster analysis identified three significantly different depth-related clades. S, N and d were significantly negatively correlated with depth"--Abstract, page iv.
