Sizing Canada's national seed supply chain : preliminary assessment focused on trees and shrubs : interim report.: Fo4-210/2023E-PDF

"In 2021-2022, the National Tree Seed Centre led a series of surveys to establish an accurate idea of genetically appropriate seed supply for forest landscape restoration (FLR) needs across Canada by 2030. This report focuses on native conifers, hardwood trees and shrubs. It also includes information on a variety of producers that supply native grasses and herbaceous plants. We summarize 115 respondents and interviewees' best practices in seed traceability, as well as their concerns over accessing a sufficient supply, the diversity of native species, and seed sources. Key questions were asked to identify potential operational bottlenecks, actions and timelines required to enhance their capacity to supply increasing FLR demand. Growers who manage their own seed disclosed the amount of native seed held in storage relative to current annual production. Organizations responsible for planting projects outlined specific types of reclamation and restoration opportunities in their region in addition to the species likely to be planted within the next five years. Growers and planting agencies also identified species that are commonly difficult to source and supply. This preliminary report provides the foundation for continual coordination and planning to sustain successful forest landscape restoration projects in the future"--Provided by publisher.
